Our tennis professionals hear this question often, and understandably so! There are a plethora of options to choose from when it comes to racquets, whether you stop by your home pro shop or the local sporting goods store. Regardless of where you choose to buy, there are a few basic factors to keep in mind before purchasing.
Size and Weight
If your 10 year-old has just decided to pick up the game of tennis, they will likely not find success with a full-grown adult racquet. Instead, you'll want to consider a lighter weight junior racquet that is aligned with the height of your player. That's right - junior racquets are sized based on the player's height to ensure the racquet is proportionate. Therefore, be sure to look at the player height each racquet is designed for, and not just the age group.
Cost
When your child decides to pick up tennis, or is successfully progressing through the sport, it can be tempting to invest in a top-of-the-line racquet so they have the best equipment to succeed at their new hobby. However, a racquet is a big investment, particularly as your child is growing and developing their own game style. Take time to find a racquet that will last, fits their playing style and is most comfortable for them! Oftentimes, the best fit is not the most expensive.
Pro's Recommendation
Above all else, remember - you are not alone in this decision! Your child's coach will be a valuable resource when selecting the best racquet for each stage of their tennis development. Don't be afraid to ask for their input, or ask if there are any racquets available for your child to demo for a few days.
